Online Schooling: Strategizing For Distractions And Technical Glitches

If your high school student is making the transition from a traditional learning environment to online schooling, dealing with distractions and technical glitches can be major issues.

Here are some ways to help your high school student strategize for success when embarking on an online schooling adventure.

Distractions

Although your high school student probably isn't a stranger to technology like tablets, cell phones, and laptops, using them to principally learn can feel very different. Some of the biggest barriers high school students face when they make the switch to online schooling are the myriad of distractions that come with digital devices.

Multiple Profiles

Most computers give users the option to log on with multiple profiles. Before your high school student begins online schooling, encourage them to create a profile for when they use the computer for learning and when they use it for entertainment. Once they've created separate profiles, they can hide applications that might distract them from completing school work or focusing on online school courses. They can also block the social media and entertainment websites they might frequent on their learning profile to eliminate the temptation to get off task when they are focused on their online schooling.

Productivity Software

If your high school student uses a tablet or cell phone to complete online school assignments and/or attend video lectures/discussions, they can install applications that hide apps and block websites when they want to focus on learning. These productivity applications are easy to install and can be customized to meet your high school student's online schooling needs.

Time Audit

Many high school students complain of having "no time" to complete online school work. In many cases, however, it's not that they don't have time, it's that they're choosing to squander the time they have. At the end of a school week, sit down with your high school student and review the summary of their screen time usage. In most cases, they'll quickly see how much time they're wasting.

Technical Glitches

Sadly, online schooling rarely goes perfectly. For high school students, these technical glitches can cause them to miss deadlines and fail to communicate with their instructors.

Document

When your high school student encounters a technical issue, they should screen-shot it immediately. This will create a time stamped proof they can use if they miss a deadline or class session.

Offline

In many cases, online school work can be competed offline. When your high school student encounters a technical glitch, encourage them to work on assignments like essays or assigned readings.
